In July 1962, she gave birth to their son Adam Clayton Powell IV. Unfortunately, this marriage also could not survive longer and ended in divorce in the year 1965. Yvette Flores Diago first met Adam Clayton Powell Jr. when she was working in the front office of a San Juan, P.R., hotel. It was in 1958. She was 27 years old. From there they started dating each other and in 1960, finally, the duo got married. With whom she had a son named Adam Clayton Powell Diago using his mother’s surname as a second surname. It is a Hispanic tradition to keep the surname of the mother as a second. However, later he changed from  “Adam Clayton Powell IV” dropping “Diago.” He was elected to the New York City Council in 1991 in a special election. He served for two terms. Powell IV also won the seat of New York state Assemblyman and served for another three terms.

From  New York, her ex-husband was the first to be elected to Congress and also the first from any state in the Northeast.

Born on 29 November 1908, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. represented the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in the United States House of Representatives from 1945 until 1971. He served for nearly three decades. He also held the office of national spokesman on civil rights and social issues. After serving 16 years in the House, he became chairman of the Education and Labor Committee in 1961, which is considered to be the most powerful position held by an African American in Congress till today.
